Individual Psychotherapy

Individial psychotherapy services at Mim Collins therapy of Valley Village, California.I’ve spent most of my professional life as a psychotherapist steeped in the heart of the human condition, working with individuals who have asked me to join them in the exploration of their inner world.

Whether we’ve spent weeks, months, or years together, my objective as a psychotherapist is to make it safer for others to enter emotional spaces where they have been too frightened, or traumatized to tread by themselves. Often the process is painful, sometimes involving opening old wounds in order to allow them the air to heal. Sometimes during therapy we need to go back to work through past experiences where my clients have gotten stuck.

At times I am a witness to someone mastering a seemingly impossible dilemma, a process which can reveal a new pathway, but only in the presence of another caring person. Individual Psychotherapy is like that. It takes courage to begin, often it takes faith and perseverance to complete, and more often than not, it can be painful. The payoff can be an opening of a new perspectives about oneself and others, a sense of personal liberation and a greater and deeper capacity to love and be loved.

Drawing from my own internal struggles and triumphs, and from my many years of training and experience in the field of psychotherapy, I have developed the capacity to embrace the situation, provide comfort, perspective, understanding and a refuge; a place from which to move forward.

Over the years I have specialized in areas of sexuality, compulsive overeating and its ramifications, including obesity, grief and loss, alternative life styles, relationship issues, divorce, codependency, communication skills, anger, addiction and depression, depending on the need of those I have worked with.

Beginning in the early years I worked with women struggling to achieve orgasm. I have worked with couples needing a broader and deeper understanding of their sexual needs and how to meet those needs, both for themselves and for their partners.

Since the late 1970’s I have worked with the issues of overeating and obesity, and developed classes that I taught through my private practice. Over time I became a Staff Member with Kaiser Permanente in their Weight Management Department. Since 2005 I have taught all of the weight management classes including the preparation course for Bariatric Surgery.

Since 2008 I have consulted with other therapists coping with Actions from the Board of Behavioral Sciences. I have supervised MFT interns working toward licensure since 1993.

About Specialties

I believe that it is important to mention that a well-trained and experienced psychotherapist has the capacity to address most issues. What brings someone to my office for the first time is often the tip of the iceberg, manifesting in stress, or pain that has roots in earlier unresolved conflicts.

It is not so much the specialty that a fine therapist advertises and/or exhibits, but his/her ability, authenticity and willingness to be with you in your world. The first step in discovering whether you and I fit together in this endeavor is to have a conversation. Feel free to call for an appointment or send me a comment through my website. I look forward to meeting with you.

All the best,
