About Me

Mim Collins received her M.A. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in 1975 from Phillips Graduate Institute (formerly California Family Study Center).  She began her work in the area of Women’s Sexuality and related issues. In 1978, Dr. Collins developed, Understanding Overeating, a program for weight management. During the 1980s, she lectured at the graduate level while teaching at USC Extension.  In 1994, she became a staff facilitator at Kaiser Permanente conducting weight management classes in the San Fernando Valley.

In 2001, Ms. Collins received her Doctorate in Psychology, specializing in psychoanalysis and the dynamics underlying our unconscious behavior patterns.  In 2005, Kaiser Permanente was the first medical center that required educational classes as a prerequisite for bariatric surgery. Dr. Collins was part of the charter staff for that program. Since that time, she has facilitated classes attended by more than 2000 patients seeking resolution to the life-long struggle of weight management and control. Weight Loss Surgery Educators, Dr. Collins’ independent program, is conducted over a four-week period and is designed to address the conflicting issues for candidates anticipating and recovering from weight loss surgery.

In her professional career, extending over 36 years Dr. Collins has worked in the areas of Women’s Issues including Female Sexuality; Transitions in Life; Grief and Loss; Codependency; Alternative Lifestyles; Weight Management; Couples Counseling; and Individual and Family Therapy.

Dr. Collins has been a staff member at the San Fernando Valley Counseling Center since 1993, supervising interns on their clinical cases as they earn experience and clinical hours towards MFT licensure. In her private practice, she provides clinical supervision and consultation for marriage & family therapists, both licensed and pre-licensed.
